William Kanengiser plays "Reflections on the Dranyen" by Andrea Clearfield
Переглядів 1,6 тис.11 місяців тому
From a live performance at the Kean University GuitarFest on June 17, 2023, William Kanengiser performs "Reflections on the Dranyen" by Philadelphia-based composer Andrea Clearfield. Inspired by the musicological field work she did with Tibetan musicians in Bhutan, the piece evokes the sonority of the dranyen, or himalayan lute, through the classical guitar. Using bended pitches, extreme color ...

Listen to the new album here: listn.fm/britishinvasion/ I’m thrilled that the British Invasion is coming! This collaboration with the Alexander String Quartet pulls together many musical styles that I’ve loved for years: rock, pop, jazz, blues, even Renaissance lute. My friends Duśan Bogdanović, Leo Brouwer and Ian Krouse transformed popular works by Sting, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and John Do...

This is the 2nd movement of Bryan Johanson's "The Bootlegger's Tale", commissioned by and dedicated to William Kanengiser, as part of the "Diaspora Project". Bryan's maternal grandfather emigrated to the US from Ireland, and settled in the Appalacian region. His livelihood was based on a craft he brought from his homeland: spirit distillation. When Prohibition started, he became a bootlegger. B...
Lost Land by Golfam Khayam (excerpts), performed by William Kanengiser
Переглядів 2,7 тис.2 роки тому
I commissioned the multi-talented Iranian composer Golfam Khayam to write a piece for my "Diaspora Project" of seven new works for guitar. "Lost Land" captures her feelings of disorientation upon returning to her homeland after years abroad. Using elements of Bach, Persian improvisitory ornaments and the evocative low A tuning on the 6th string, Golfam creates a haunting sense of space and emot...
On the Sol, en Mi by Frank Wallace (excerpt) performed by William Kanengiser

A little taste of this gorgeous piece by Frank, drawn from his "Harlequin in Love" suite. I'll play it as an encore in the program that will air for the Frank Wallace Festival organized by the Boston Guitar Society this weekend. My concert will feature a number of works by Frank, as well as de Murcia and Ernesto Garcia de Leon, and a fun duet with my friend David Mozqueda. It's a free concert t...

A short excerpt from the final work written by Frank Wallace for solo guitar. Commissioned by his son Adam, and completed on his wife Nancy's birthday, it's a haunting and inspiring trip, as Frank mentions in the subtitle "'round the world and back". Here's a few measure from the second movement, entitled, "Arctic Tern".

William Kanengiser plays African Sketch by Dusan Bogdanovic
Переглядів 3,4 тис.5 років тому
The opening section of the first of Dusan’s polyrhythmic African Sketches, using prepared guitar to imitate the “kora”, or African harp. It’s a simple trick: a standard staple is slightly bent, and fitted over two adjacent strings. This couples the two strings together to create the wonderfully clangy tone.
William Kanengiser plays and talks about "Magic Serenade" by Bryan Johanson
Переглядів 1,7 тис.5 років тому
The evocative Magic Serenade features a simple yet ingenious trick to transform the guitar into a mystical harp. Bryan Johanson asks the performer to put a capo on the 7th fret, and pluck both sides of the string to create an unexpectedly resonant sonority. One of Bill Kanengiser's favorite pieces, the Magic Serenade is a soothing, heartfelt tune with some deep passion behind it. At the end, Bi...

LAGQ Live!: Overture from The Nutcracker (Tchaikovsky)
Bloody outstanding !!
Cool
I overheard Mr. Kanengiser at a summit the other day say that he put this on one of his CDs and "credited the percussion guys", including "Righty McToe".
Wonderful performance! Would love to see a guitarist and a pipa player perform this piece together. I can imagine the back and forth between these tow instruments could be really fun and exciting!
What a delight - and the slide work was a special treat and surprise!
Fantastic concert, Bill - and your Brouwer rocked! Warm wishes from Michigan.
Would rather have this one. Your right.

The worst part of this video is that it ends.
This video won't ever not be great

Beautiful project. Congrats, Bill
that guitar sounds so mellow and lush. gorgeous.
Played this in a guitar competition with my high school guitar ensemble and I can say, it is very difficult, but fun.

Excellent warmup routine. I bookmarked it. I would like to suggest you check out squeezing therapy putty. It's a great warm up too, and I can feel the effect not only in my hand, but all the way up into my forearm.

Ha! Jazz too wow!
It’s glorious
One of the guitars sounds like a bajo sexto guitaro.
My most wonderful inspiration
Sad when a good player starts playing these double tops with their heavy basses and wolfnotes galore. Especially in his case, coming from a fantastic Humphrey - a maker who made some of the best classical guitars ever. Full of tone and character...and well balanced too.
Beautiful and exquisite! Which guitar he is playing on here..?
Amazing information professor!!!!Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I can’t find many performances from Golfam around so I’m glad you put this one out. I hope she’s is planning a record soon, her and Laura Snowden need LPs we can enjoy. Cheers Bill for all you music too!

I got some video's of 4 or 5 year old me waiting for the Pachelbel part. Such a nice memory!!
Technically and musically perfect
😱
Mr. Kanengiser a fan from Brazil here ! Please, there’s a live record which you play Alla turca de Wolfgang. Please put it on Deezer or Spotify, mainly Deezer that is the one I have !!! There’s a piece of that song on the movie with a “bluesy” end !!! It were you sir? Big pleasure to listen to you playing!!!
